News@www.adoption-net.co.uk Story published on January 13, 2004 Diary of an adopter Week 6 So here we are in the New Year at last, I am so glad that 2004 has arrived as I feel that we have turned a corner, and this year is going to be such a special year for Harry and I. In our diary (which I wrote just before Christmas) I mentioned a sibling group from a local authority (different to our own) that Patrick was looking into for us. Unfortunately, as Christmas was looming Patrick was unable to find out any more information for us so we are still waiting for the details to come through. In the meantime though I had subscribed to 'Be My Parent' (from BAAF) and on Xmas Eve the November/December issue arrived. I had very mixed feelings reading it, so excited that our future son or daughter(s) could be inside that very magazine but also so sad to see so many children looking for their forever families. Not a day has gone past since receiving 'Be My Parent' that I haven't looked at it and read about the children. We have identified some of the sibling groups that we think we may be the right parents for and I have contacted 'Be My Parent' for their Social Workers details so that I can ring them over the next few days. During the Xmas holidays we went to some friends of ours to exchange presents. My friend's brother and sister in law had adopted a little girl from abroad and she was at the house the afternoon we visited, playing with their children. She was adorable, a really gorgeous little girl, it made me feel so broody! I also spoke to a lady that my mother works with over Xmas; she had adopted two little girls some time ago. It was really lovely to speak to her and to hear all about her experience. She obviously adores her two daughters and is so happy; she came across as a truly loving and wonderful mum. She kindly invited me to their home to meet the girls and to have a chat and I am going to take up her invitation as soon as I can, seeing them as a family and knowing that will be us too soon will be wonderful. Tomorrow Patrick is visiting us, I can't believe it's nearly 3 months since we last saw him, three months since approval, though the waiting has been hard it really has flown. Patrick is going to explain about the next stages through to adoption. Although I am fairly au fait with what will happen, I am still a little confused by how a care order for example will affect us. Finally, we went out with some friends New Years Eve (hopefully the last one we can go out!!!!!!!!!) for a meal, we were each given a Christmas cracker, I couldn't believe it when mine opened and a baby's bottle fell out, my friend and I both shouted 'its a sign' !! A sign of a very happy 2004.
