Diary of an adopter

Adoption week 10

Well, it's been another fairly quiet month, I wish I had something really positive to let you all know about, but here we are still waiting, patiently!

We went to the support group last week but it was a cold, dismal night and we turned out to be the only ones who had turned up apart from our Social Worker! Never mind, after the training evening we had last week, I do think that a lot more of the other couples waiting will turn up to the next evening. It was obvious how useful we all had found not only the training but also the opportunity to chat to one another and share stories.

So..our training, it was really useful and supportive, our Social Worker Patrick ran the session alongside a trainee social worker named Penny. Penny had decided to become a social worker after having been an adoptive mum herself the last few years. Penny has four sons/daughters (all siblings), it was so lovely to meet her and to hear all about her own experiences, it made the training all the more real and of course more interesting as it gave us real situations to think about. The training covered all sorts of different areas such as the legal process, contact with birth family, attachment problems, neglect and abuse. Harry and I found both the sessions that we attended really helpful. We met another couple who had attended the original training with us prior to the home assessment, it was so nice to catch up and find out how they were getting on, like us they were still waiting to find their son or daughter.

Towards the end of last week I attended the training to accompany the social workers on initial visits. This was also really interesting, it was a really nice group made up of foster mums and a couple who had recently adopted a baby boy. I think it is an excellent concept and nice to see our local authority making us feel like we are really contributing to the adoption process.

And that is all my news this week. Its been a fantastic week for training which has been very supportive and valuable to Harry and I.

And now back to our search to find our children.
