Diary of an adopter - Page two of two

After a very puzzled and slightly dazed look on his face, Jamie was quite disappointed to learn that there wasn't a fire and he wouldn't be seeing any firemen! Anyway, after returning to our room, he slept like a log after about half an hour of whispering to himself! We were absolutely pleased as punch!

The following day we went with our friends from the day before, and Tim's best man's family to a farm centre. The kids absolutely loved it and had a whale of a time! We then visited Tim's sister and her friend and had a wonderful time there playing football.

Tim's sister made Jamie a road from pieces of paper for his cars and he was thrilled to bits with that! (Mind you, since we've got home, our cat had a bit of a fit on it, and it now has big slashed holes in it - I told Jamie there was an earthquake overnight!). Tim's sister's friend gave him a little miniature fox, which we call Foxy, and who now sits on our fire in our living room! We are now planning a bit of a long weekend trip to the seaside in a few weeks, so of course, we're feeling very relaxed now about how he will cope with that. Hope we'll be OK!

Of course, it's not an easy ride and the tantrums are continuing to be corkers - he nearly lamped me one with a shoe this morning whilst sitting on the stair throwing a hissy fit!

Memo to self: remove all throwable objects in event of tantrum in future!

Bedtimes have settled down very well now (thank you Mothercare Reward Chart!) and I think that's probably a good indicator of how he's settling down himself. He's also been a little poorly with a cold and a really rattly cough, so I ended up taking him to the doctors as it just wouldn't clear.

The doctor asked him how he was and he said "My daddy's at work getting pennies so we can go on the London Eye!" (Jamie is fascinated by the London Eye - we're visiting the capital soon to see my brother so a trip on the Eye could be on the cards!) It wasn't exactly the explanation of his illness the doctor had expected, but a lot more entertaining! He's fine though and as I write is much better.

The papers are now lodged with the courts and they are just awaiting reports from our social workers before they can issue us with a court date. Jamie already knows that we're going to the court to see the judge, so he's quite excited about that. I've explained to him what will happen, so hopefully he'll be enthusiastic on the day about us becoming a forever family!! I do have visions of him saying no to everything the judge asks him!

We've still not got a life story book for him yet, and to be honest I hope it comes soon! I had one of those first difficult moments the other morning when Jamie pointed out some pictures we have on the wall upstairs of us with our nieces when they were babies.

Jamie pointed at them and said "Look, that's me!". I said it wasn't and told him who they were and he said "Where's pictures of me when I was a baby?".

Cue internal mad panic!! So, I thought, well, tell him the truth. So I said that his social worker had some pictures and she was going to let us have them soon so that we could look at them and put them up on the wall too.

Thank goodness he seemed quite satisfied by the explanation! Isn't it hard knowing what to say in these situations?! I must admit that until we get photographs, then I don't even want to start thinking of how we will tell him about what happened before he was taken into care.

At the moment, we're just reinforcing to him the role of his foster carers and the fact that his social worker was looking for a forever family and found his new mummy and daddy. We always tell him that he is our special adopted son and that we love him very much.

I still can't believe I'm a mummy and it still somehow feels that I'm just "playing" at it sometimes and that I'm so transparent that everyone can see through me!

The temptation is to feel as though you have to explain to everyone that you've only been a mummy for a matter of weeks! I'm sure that I'll get the hang of it!! Oh well, must be off - I've a pile of washing and ironing awaiting me!!
