News@www.adoption-net.co.uk Story published on February 26, 2003 Week 10 diary It must be getting boring for you reading this, but we're still determined to write this diary, even though there are no developments to report on yet. We're now writing the diary every three weeks, but we'll soon revert back to the fortnightly entries when something happens! I must admit that I've been quite close to picking up the phone and just saying hello to Susan, our social worker, but I've resisted temptation so far! I don't know how long I'll resist though! We're also equally determined to make the most of whatever child-free time we may have left, so we've been up to quite a few things over the last three weeks since we last wrote. We managed a trip to Manchester for the day, which was great. Ended up in the evening at that Sum 41 concert - for the uninitiated, they are a rock group of 4 very young Canadian guys. As we were making our way over to the venue, all we could see were young kids around us, with Sum 41 t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. on - hair gelled in all manner of colours and styles. Tim and I started to panic that we'd stick out like a sore thumb. I must admit that we were beginning to think that we'd made on huge mistake. However, we were saved in our embarrassment by one big factor - when young kids want to go to these concerts, they have to drag at least on parent along with them. Hence we fit in! Tim said that people probably thought we were there with our kids, but they were too embarrassed to sit by us!!! Anyway, we had a superb time! Last weekend we went into London. Now, I'll explain that the intention wasn't to go to the Anti-War March. We'd booked a special fare train tickets quite a few weeks ago, and we were originally going to meet up with friends and go to the Star Trek Adventure in Hyde Park that day. We'd pre-purchased tickets for it and everything. Not surprisingly, the Star Trek exhibition decided to close that day due to the fact that the rally at the end of the march was being held in Hyde Park. Luckily we got our money back on that, but decided that we'd still go down to London for the day, as the cheap rail tickets were too good an opportunity to lose out on. Well, I don't know how we managed to do it, but we completely missed the march by some quite nifty changing of underground stations and a bit of pre-planning. We had a lovely day. We went to the Science Museum, which we both hadn't visited since we were young. It's very different now. A lot of it is modern, interactive and geared towards children, but there are still a lot of the old cases full of instruments and relics which I remember from when I last visited on school trip. We agreed it would be a great place to take children, however, some of the exhibitions and the IMAX cinema is an extra cost, and it could turn out quite expensive for a family if you wanted to see everything. Also, they have an enormous shop full of loads of little pocket money toys, some at not-so-pocket-money prices - it would be a nightmare going in there with children! We managed to fit in a lovely lunch by the Thames and a quick browse around the Tate Modern before coming home. A tiring but enjoyable day. So, here we are, fast hurtling towards April when the new laws are introduced regarding Adoption Leave and Pay, so if we don't hear from Susan until then, then at least we know that we'll qualify for things. Even so, it still doesn't stop me thinking about whether or not to pick up that phone ....!!
