Diary of an adopter - Page two of two

He's completely dry in the daytime, but he would never do a number two during the day - it seemed that as soon as we put a nappy on him for bedtime, probably seven times out of 10 he'd do a number two in it even before he'd gone to bed.

There seemed to be some sort of barrier with him not wanting to do it on the toilet. We decided to bite the bullet one day, and just try not putting a nappy on him at night. Success! He did wet the bed, but the following day, used his potty for a number two and boy was he proud. So proud that he decided to help me out by emptying it in the toilet - well, lets just say his aim wasn't too brilliant, but the thought was there!

Now he has got the hang of it, so much that he's really proud of it and now uses the toilet and not his potty - the other day he cried out from the toilet: "Mummy, come and see!" I went in and he was stood there pointing and said "Look mummy, I've done three poos... there's mummy, there's daddy and there's Jamie!"

I had to turn away so he didn't see me laughing! He will occasionally now be dry throughout the night and not wet the bed which is great, although last night he did and this morning he gave me his little dog beanie toy and said "Mummy, doggie smells horrible" and he's right, he did as I think he'd been a little too close to Jamie in the night! Poor doggie and Bob the builder - they're getting quite used to the 60 degree cycle in the washing machine of late!

Bedtimes continue to get better and better. In fact, he nearly earned that goldfish this week by getting all his reward stickers except he refused to eat practically all his dinner one day so missed out on his full-week reward by just one sticker! We didn't dwell on it too much and said, "Oh well, maybe next week", and then changed the subject! He's now saying that he also wants a kitten, but we've told him that he won't even stand a chance until relations between him and Jasper improve first!

The routine of life with Jamie in our house has nicely settled and its now getting closer to the time when I've got to start thinking whether to go back to work - to be honest, we don't think the option not going back is open to us.

I'm seeing my boss soon and have sat down and got my brain cells working by producing a spreadsheet with childcare fees versus how much I'd earn doing various part-time options. It's all down to them at the end of the day, so I'll let you know how it goes. I've got some time yet before I have to make a definite decision, but I always like to know what I'm doing well enough in advance and I think it's only fair to my employers too.

We're still awaiting his life story book, but we're hoping that his social worker will bring that to our next review meeting. In the meantime, I've started to put together a scrapbook of everything we've done with him so far and places we've been and filled it full of tickets and brochures and things.

I've also stuck in things like first cards he's made and sent to us, and drawings from nursery. The idea was that I'd let him help out putting it together, but it's not really easy for him to do it at his age, especially in a way so it will become more of a memory book in future.

So for now, its just me doing it in the evening, but he knows it's there and we often get it out and look through it.

Anyway, I think that's all for now. Next time I can update you on the review meeting, how I got on with my employers and hopefully how we're progressing with that all important court date!
