Diary of an adopter

Page two of two

Well, I needn't have worried at all! He absolutely loved it. Of course, you can see a lot of train tracks and stations from there, which really fascinated him. When we were at the top, he had absolutely no fear of leaning right against the side of the pod and looking down - he's better at heights than his mummy that's for sure!!

I kept saying "Jamie, don't lean on the glass!!" It was a really long, hot and exhausting day, but to his credit he kept wide awake until we got home and then went to bed and we didn't hear a peep from him! We must do it more often!!

Bedtimes can still occasionally be a problem, but its now once in a blue moon that we get the "getting up scenario" where no sooner do you put him down, he's following you out of his room. A couple of weeks back, he actually ran after me across the landing shouting "I'm going to kick you" which was nice!!

Tim was downstairs and heard him too, so I'm afraid that our "no speaking" rule was broken that night and he was given a bit of a talking to. It worked - we didn't hear a peep from him again that night and he hasn't done it since.

Its really hard to set down boundaries when you have waited to have a child for so long - again, you go on this real guilt trip that you shouldn't really be being so firm, but when you see the results of sticking to your boundaries, then its all worthwhile.

I remember the health visitor saying to me to try to set boundaries and stick to them - don't have elastic ones. You have to be firm but it's flaming hard!!

Jamie and Jasper, our cat continue to have a hot/cold relationship with one another. As I write, Jamie is stroking her, and she is looking decidedly like she doesn't like it!

This morning, I actually saw him hit her on her head, so he was well and truly told off for that I'm afraid. We sat him down and explained that he should never be cruel to animals and that Jasper is our pet and we all need to take care of her.

The other day I heard Jasper yowl and walk into the kitchen, closely followed by Jamie. I asked Jamie what he'd done to her, and he said he'd "pushed her"! Anyway, I told him that he shouldn't and that he should apologise to her. He went over to her and said "Sorry Jasper", and then he said in a high pitched squeaky voice "That's all right Jamie", then turned to me and said "Jasper said its OK mummy". I had to try not to laugh!

Jamie is very demanding of food, and we often wonder whether this is something from his past or just because he's a bit greedy. He only has to see something fleetingly, and he will demand it. We were walking down the local high street the other day, and a couple behind us said they were going for chips and Jamie piped up "I want chips"!

He also wants his way all the time and it can get like he thinks the whole world revolves around him and what he wants to do. For example, I don't let him watch too much TV, but whilst I'm preparing dinner then it's a good distraction.

The other day, I went to put the TV on and was ready to change the channel to Cbeebies, and he immediately started whingeing "I want my programme on". So I turned it off completely! Cue tantrum! Somehow I think he's been used to getting what he wants at his foster carers and he has really got to learn that he can't get everything he wants all the time.

The hilarious situations still occur. Last week, we were at the supermarket when he announced in a rather loud voice "Mummy, when I grow up I want to be a little girl!".

This morning he did a classic. We were again in the supermarket packing the bags at the checkout when Jamie suddenly said "Monsters Inc." looking at the checkout operator. I looked up at the woman, and I swear she was the spitting image of the female bespectacled administrator slug-type monster in the film. Luckily I don't think she got it, and I managed to change the subject quickly. Phew! Kids eh??!!

Due to holidays, there has been some delay by our social workers in producing the reports for the Court. We were told by the Courts that as soon as the reports were submitted, we would be notified of the date soon after that, so hopefully we should know soon.

Well, I think that's all for now. We've a long weekend away coming up soon for my birthday treat, so that will be fun. We're hoping to have a smooth ride, but you never know how things will go do you?!
