Claims battle begins for foster victims

A retired nurse is calling for victims of abuse in foster care to come forward and join the campaign for compensation.

Mary Johnstone is a member of Survivors, a UK wide group formed to support fellow survivors who are still suffering as a consequence of abuse whilst in care.

A group of survivors who suffered whilst in institutions are currently in the process of receiving compensation from the state.

Mrs Johnstone, of Pontyberem, wants the same for victims of abuse in foster care.

She is trying to form contacts with others in Wales, whether Welsh, Irish or English, to be able to push forward the case.

"I feel we have got to form a separate group, " she said. "There must be people in Wales who suffered." Mrs Johnstone aims to start with small steps by building up contacts and offering information and support for people.

She was in foster care in Ireland during the 1950s with a brutal couple from the age of 15 months to 15 years.

Mrs Johnstone can be contacted on 01269 871675.
