Dream day

The mother of four 'very special' girls made their wishes come true to thank them for being such wonderful daughters.

And the surprise meant the girls could be bridemaids for their parents.

Lorraine Cridge and her husband Derek adopted Layla (15), who is Down's syndrome, when she was just five-months old.

The adoption was so successful the couple went on to adopt three more Down's syndrome babies, identical twins Carlyn and Rose (now 13) and finally, Lucy, who is now 11.

Mrs Cridge said: "Derek and I couldn't have children. The first adoption was so successful we just wanted to carry on."

In fact, the couple are so proud of their girls, Lorraine arranged a special surprise to thank them for being such fantastic daughters.

Mrs Cridge said: "Lucy has always wanted to be a bridesmaid and I just happened to be watching Living TV one day and saw a programme called Dreammakers.

"It's basically like Jim'll Fix It - making wishes come true - and the one I saw advertised was specifically about weddings.
"I contacted them originally to ask whether anyone would consider making Lucy's wish come true and have her as a bridesmaid at their wedding.
"None of the girls had even been to a wedding before. Lucy would get our wedding album out and complain she had missed it!"

Mrs Cridge explained how a researcher from the programme visited their home in King Edward Street, Scunthorpe, to talk to the family.
"She found out it was our 25th wedding anniversary this year and said it would be lovely to have a service to celebrate that, and have all the girls as bridesmaids."

So, on February 28, Lorraine, Derek and their four daughters - surrounded by friends and family - held a special service at Normanby Hall not only to celebrate the anniversary, but also to offer thanks for their 'very special' family.

Mrs Cridge said: "I organised most of the day, so it was a total surprise to both the girls and Derek.

"The film crew turned up on the doorstep in the morning and filmed their reactions."

The girls were then whisked off to Normanby Hall in a vintage Rolls Royce to get ready for their big day while Lorraine and Derek were presented with their outfits at home.

"The producers had bought me an ivory trouser suit, Derek was decked out in a suit and the girls looked beautiful in their ivory bridesmaid dresses - I was totally overwhelmed," Mrs Cridge said.

The Rev Mark Batty, a family friend who had christened all four girls, led the service, which was followed by a reception at Normanby Hall.

Mrs Cridge said: "The whole day was really about the girls, to say they have been such wonderful daughters. "They have all given us such a happy family life and I just wanted to say to everyone how very special they are."

The Cridge's family celebration will be screened on Living TV on Saturday at 6.30pm.
