Adoption campaign aims to recruit families

The countdown has begun for this years adoption campaign.

National Adoption Week, which starts next Monday, is a nationwide campaign to recruit new families for the 5000 children currently waiting for secure and loving homes. The campaign is co-ordinated by BAAF Adoption & Fostering, the UK's leading adoption charity.

During the week events will be taking place nationwide including:

  • TV celebrity Melinda Messenger will officially launch the week on Monday 14 October.
  • Every morning during the week GMTV will highlight BAAF's work and feature children waiting for adoption.
  • Results of a MORI poll exploring public attitudes to adoption will be published
  • LivingTV will be dedicating Monday 14 October to National Adoption Week with adoption-related programmes, including special episodes of its talk shows and an adoption movie.
  • An adopter recruitment helpline will be offering information and advice to people thinking about adopting.
  • Adoption open days and events, organised by local authorities and adoption agencies, will be held in communities nationwide

Supported by the Department of Health, the campaign aims to dispell some of the myths around adoption and get everyone thinking about whether they could adopt a child. It will focus on the theme "Do something amazing - Transform a life", which highlights the difference adoption can make to a child's life and the life of the adoptive family too.

In the light of the new Adoption and Children Bill, which will be debated in the House of Lords during the week, the campaign will also highlight forthcoming changes in the law which will affect prospective adopters.
