IT support for children in care

A new information technology package, which aims to improve educational support for young people in foster care and children's homes in the Highlands, has been launched.

The Virtual Schoolbag will give them free educational software and Internet access, which can be used on any PC.

The BT and Microsoft-backed scheme, also being put into operation in Stirling and North Lanarkshire, will be launched by the Executive Minister for Education and Young People Cathy Jamieson.

Because looked after children are often faced with constant moving, the initiative will allow them to access material wherever they are.It is also hoped that online personal workbooks will be developed by the young people, enabling them to share information with health, social work and educational staff.

Stirling Council director of children's services Gordon Jeyes, also general secretary of the Association of Directors of Education, the organisation behind the scheme, said: "This is an exciting initiative to enhance support for children in care. I am sure that this can increase motivation and give the children involved a sense of control of their learning.

"It can raise the level of achievement."
