Figures announced

The Department of Health has announced the publication of this bulletin. It presents statistics on users' experiences of Personal Social Services in England in 2001-2002.

The figures are based on surveys conducted by councils, and this is the second time that the Department of Health has asked councils to conduct this survey.

Key points: In England in 2001-2002:

In answer to the question 'Did you get the help quickly after a decision was made to provide services?'

  • 83% of respondents said 'Yes', less than the 84% figure in 2000-01.
  • 85% of white respondents said 'Yes' compared to 72% of black and minority ethnic groups.
  • 76% of those aged 18-64 said 'Yes' compared with 85% of those aged 65 or over.

In answer to the question 'Did social services staff take note of any important matters relating to your race, culture or religion?'

  • 39% of respondents said 'Yes', more than the 37% figure in 2000-01.
  • 38% of white respondents said 'Yes' compared to 51% of black and minority ethnic groups.
  • 41% of those aged 18-64 said 'Yes' compared with 39% of those aged 65 or over.

Caution should be used when interpreting the results of the response to the question about race, culture and religion. Many councils reported that users have not answered as expected.

There was a relatively high percentage of don't know responses and some users may have answered 'no' rather than 'not applicable' when there were no important matters to take into account.

Together these mean that the indicator value is likely to be lower than the 'true' figure according to the Department of Health press office.
