News@www.adoption-net.co.uk Story published on November 11, 2002 Children's needs first I was heartened to hear of the news of the resignation of John Bercow. At least there is one Conservative MP who understands that the needs of the children are paramount. Of course, we would all wish for every child to grow up in a secure family environment, within a traditional marriage. But not all marriages are secure. Not to allow all who wish to adopt a child to do so, is to commit large numbers of children to a life of changing foster placements or long stays in children's homes. This is not as dreadful as it sounds, since we have thousands of committed foster parents and many excellent children's homes where the staff are caring and loving. Children often cannot speak up for themselves but if they could, they would all choose a life with a single sex couple or a single parent, who would love, respect and care for them into adulthood rather than stay in a children's home. Any loving parent is 300 per cent better than none.
