Adoptee group will share experiences

Adoptees in Blackburn have set up a unique organization aimed at bringing former adopted children together to reminisce about past experiences.

The Blackburn and District Adoptees Support Group, based in Blackburn, but open to adopted children all over the country, was established by Lisa Brooks.

32-year old Lisa believes that the support group encourages visitors to share their experiences and build a bond of empathy based on living through adoption.

Lisa does not generalise about the experience of adoption, admitting that each case is relative, but suggests that groups like hers do provide some measure of comfort to adopted children.

Adoptees often end up asking questions about their biological parents - when their adoptive parents die or the adoptees themselves want to start a family of their own - and Lisa, when pregnant, got in touch with Manchester-based group After Adoption for some answers.

Unfortunately, Lisa discovered that her mother had died and, although she briefly met her half-sister, they no longer keep in touch.

Despite this, Lisa strenuously defends her decision to interrogate her past, claiming that it was important for her to face her history.

The support that Adoptee groups like hers provide undoubtedly helps when coping with this sort of sensitive issue.

The group meets at the Blackburn and District Blind Society on the Railway Road, Blackburn, the second Tuesday of every month at 7pm. For Details ring Lisa on 01254 682644.
