Carers rewarded for long service

Foster carers in Neath and Port Talbot received cash windfalls of up to £1,000. The county council has decided to reward carers who have committed years of service to children across the community.

Just one year of service earned £100 but carers with 20 years under their belt picked up £1,000 at a special awards ceremony at the Princess Royal Theatre, Port Talbot.

And singer, comedian and story-teller Max Boyce was on hand to congratulate them and hand out the cheques.

The unique council scheme was launched as part of National Foster Carers fortnight when it is hoped others will come forward to help.

Head of Children's Services Ray Ciborowski said: "These annual awards are a means of saying a very public thank you to our foster carers. It is recognition of the way in which they give of their time, experience and skills in showing commitment to children who for one reason or another are unable to live with their own parents.

"In many ways foster carers are unsung heroes and I want to record my appreciation of the important work they do."

There are currently more than 100 foster carers in Neath and Port Talbot looking after children aged up to 17. The award scheme, which gives rewards of £100 for one year, £250 for two years, £500 for 10 years and £1,000 for 20 years, is being financed by the council's Children's First programme.

Neath Port Talbot councillor Olga Jones said: "I am delighted to personally pay tribute to foster carers for the service they provide day in and day out in helping children and young people overcome any difficulties they may have."

The council has also launched a recruitment campaign with posters across the county.
