Traders ride to welcome kids

Cycling shopkeepers will be using pedal power to help raise money for children with special needs.

Members of Newland Traders' Association, based in Hull, are taking part in a 25-mile bike ride around Beverley and the surrounding villages to raise money for KIDS.

Tony Blanchard, owner of the DIY shop W Foster, is just one of several people taking part in the fundraising event on July 21 which starts at at 10am.

He said: "I really enjoy cycling and if I can do it while raising money for something as worthwhile as KIDS, then even better.
"The new home will be just down the road from us and so it's good to be able to do things for them. Hopefully, we'll be able to make it our official charity and do a lot more for them."

Mr Blanchard added: "It should be a really good day. We don't get competitive, it's just nice to be able to have a leisurely ride around the East Riding villages."

The ride will take cyclists on a circular route from Tickton Grange to Leconfield, South Dalton, Etton, Cherry Burton, Walkington, Beverley and back to Tickton Grange. Cyclists will meet at Tickton Grange at 10am.

Philippa Stout, regional fundraiser for KIDS, said she was delighted members of the Newland Traders' Association had pledged their help to the appeal - New Home for KIDS - which aims to raise £100,000.

This money will enable the charity to move from its current base at Centre 88, Saner Street, off Anlaby Road, to a 14-roomed house on Cottingham Road. Ms Stout said: "It's wonderful that the traders are giving us so much support. It's wonderful because we will be moving into their community, and it makes us feel very welcome."

Everyone is welcome to take part in the sponsored cycle ride. For more information, or sponsorship forms, contact KIDS on (01482) 321439.
