Social workers get a shake-up

People waiting for social services care in Gloucestershire should not have to wait so long under a new system.

From Friday, residents who need to speak to a social worker will do so immediately. In the past, they may have had to go through a lengthy referral process.

The changes come a month after the county council's social services department was awarded just one star out of a possible three by government inspectors, who criticised waiting times for key services.

In January this year, a joint review by the Audit Commission and Social Services Inspectorate also criticised waiting times.

Department spokeswoman Sarah Wood said the reorganisation had been in the pipeline for two years.

She said: "The Audit Commission commented favourably on the scheme when they saw the early plans during the inspection."

Until now, people were referred to their nearest team of social workers. That often meant they were not immediately able to see someone with the specialist knowledge to tackle their problem.

Under the new scheme, a central helpdesk staffed by specialists in all fields will be the first port of call. Inquiries will either be handled on the spot or passed straight to the social worker or occupational therapist who can deal with them.

Staff will be grouped according to their ability. There will be groups of specialists in learning disabilities, sensory services, ethnic minority communities, adults and children. A review team will make sure the service runs smoothly.

Coun Mark Hendry (Lab, Brockworth & Hucclecote), the council's cabinet member for adult care, said: "This is about greater efficiency behind the scenes."

The social services helpdesk number is 01452 426868.
