Neglected child had frostbite and scabs

A Derby mother cruelly neglected her teenage daughter so that she suffered frostbite in her ears and scabs on her legs caused by being poorly dressed in cold weather, a court heard.

Andrew Peet, prosecuting, told Derby Crown Court yesterday that the 13-year-old would often wear a thin blouse and coat and no tights in cold weather.

Her mother was advised to take her to the doctors but the skin condition on her legs was not mentioned at the surgery, the court heard.

The girl was taken into foster care in January when her 35-year-old mother was arrested. Neither can be named for legal reasons.

The woman, who admitted cruelty to a child, told the police in an interview that the girl was difficult to control and she was happy for her daughter to be placed in care.

Mr Peet told the court that the woman's other children were all well cared for.

Judge John Wait put the woman on a three-year community rehabilitation order.

She must not contact the girl without the supervision of social services, must co-operate in a care plan for her and go on a skills course.
