Funding boost for estate's youth project

A programme to reduce anti-social behaviour on the city's Thornton estate has been given a £28,000 boost.

A grant by the Hull Children's Fund will be used to support a range of activities for young people at Thornton Community Centre, in Walker Street, off Anlaby Road.

Activities will include various sports, social and educational services, as well as football teams and a homework club.

The initiative is being run in conjunction with the Thornton Community Warden service, operated by the Goodwin Resource Centre Association.

John Marshall, Goodwin's community safety manager, said: "This additional funding is excellent news and will enable us to provide a youth co-ordinator and three youth workers at the community centre.

"In the short time the centre has been open, we have had an excellent response from young people, with the youth club attracting 65 members."
