League stars help kids in care

Rugby league stars at Hull Kingston Rovers have backed a campaign to find new foster carers for city children.

Its support of the worthy cause kicked off on Sunday when the players dedicated their game against Featherstone Rovers to the 650 children in care throughout Hull.

Banners highlighting the urgent need for more foster carers were displayed throughout the Craven Park ground, and an appeal for people to come forward was included in the matchday programme.

Free match tickets were offered to children and young people in care while staff from Hull Social Services fostering team handed out leaflets.

Hull FC and Hull City are also backing the initiative.

The involvement of Hull's sporting heroes in the foster carer recruitment campaign was the brainchild of Hull Children's Rights Officer Craig Clark.

He said: "This is an excellent way to encourage children's love of sport and to highlight the need for more foster carers.
"We hope that fans attending the games will start thinking about whether they could be a foster carer and how they could help make a difference to a child's life."

Assistant director of Hull Social Services Margaret Dennison said: "We are always looking for new ways to raise awareness of the need for more foster carers.
"With the help of the sporting clubs we can reach thousands of people."
