International adoption ban could be lifted

The US ambassador has said in a statement that Romania should resume overseas adoption and deal with the corruption that caused their suspension last year.

Romania banned international adoptions after growing pressure from the EU after allegations of corruption and bribery. The adoptions of approximately 3,500 children were blocked according to Yahoo News.

Serban Mihailescu, a government minister, said Romania is drafting a bill to clean up the adoption process but would not say when he thought it would be sent to parliament.

International adoptions became possible after the 1989 execution of Nicolae Ceausescu. Under his regime, about 100,000 children languished in squalid state orphanages - the result of his prohibition of abortions and birth control.
