News@www.adoption-net.co.uk Story published on August 13, 2002 Barnardo's asks families to help vulnerable teens into adulthood Children's charity Barnardo's is appealing for local people to help support vulnerable teenagers. The charity has launched a recruitment campaign which aims to encourage Aberdeenshire residents to open up their homes to youngsters who are at risk of becoming homeless. The charity is looking for people who would be willing to let young people spend time in their home. The Supported Lodgings Scheme, based in Peterhead, is part of the Aberdeenshire 16+ Project, which aims to prepare young people who have been in care for the giant step to adulthood. Working on an outreach basis throughout Aberdeenshire, it is designed to help in four key areas: income, employment, accommodation and personal relationships. Barnardo's scheme co-ordinator Graham Birnie said: "We are working with a number of young people, from the age of 16, who have moved on from residential and foster care, and others who are vulnerable and in need of support. "Not all of them feel they have the skills or confidence to live independently and it is anticipated that these youngsters will benefit greatly from spending time within a caring household. "Carers will receive a financial allowance. In return, they will be expected to advise on for example emotional and health issues, financial matters and a range of practicalities from cooking an evening meal to dealing with bills." Barnardo's is inviting applications. Potential carers must have a spare bedroom and a genuine interest in helping a young person to become an independent member of the community. Successful applicants will receive comprehensive training and continuous support. For more information, contact Graham Birnie or Shirley Firth, on 01779 481467.
