The dispute over low pay among council workers is on the brink of ending after both sides agreed to a set of independent recommendations.

Unions suspended all industrial action after they and local government representatives agreed to pay proposals laid down by the conciliation service Acas.

The move comes after two days of intense negotiations at Acas headquarters in London and means the second all-day strike planned for August 14, which also effected children's services departments, is now off.
