The Department of Health has published the results of the annual (September) census of the workforce of Social Services Departments in England.
The statistical bulletin, Personal Social Services staff of Social Services Departments at 30th September 2001 England, contains information on those employed by Local Authority Social Services departments in England.
The main report can be viewed on the Department of Health web site but the main findings are as follows.
In September 2001, Councils with Social Services Responsibilities (CSSRs) in England employed 211,300 staff (whole time equivalent (wte)).
This is 3% fewer than in September 2000 and 10% fewer than in September 1996. These reductions mainly reflect the greater use of the private sector for residential care and home care and councils transferring some children's posts to their educational directories.
Women account for just over 80% of wte staff and 56% of all staff work on a part-time basis.
Half of all wte staff work in an area office or field work setting; a quarter work in residential care.
81% of all staff are known to be white, around 8% are known to be black and minority ethnic groups and around 11% are of unknown ethnic origin
