Free vote for MPs over gay adoption rights

The right for lesbian and gay couples to adopt children has moved a step closer, after MPs were given the right to a free vote on the issue.

The Government are to allow MPs and peers to follow their consciences on changes to the law, giving same-sex and unwed couples the right to provide "loving homes for children" in care.

The move will be welcomed by gay rights campaigners, children's organisations and adoption groups, but is set to see tough opposition from Christian groups and most Tories.

While the majority of Labour and Liberal Democrat MP are also expected to back the vote to make two amendments to the Adoption and Children Bill.

Currently, there are about 60,0000 children in care, but only 3,00 are adopted each year.

The admendments have beeb tabled by David Hinchcliffe, Labour chairman of the House of Commons Health Select Committee and Evan Harris, Liberal Democrats heath spokeman.

Mr Harris said: "A free vote is better than the Government opposing it, because with the support of the Liberal Democrats and Labour MPs, the majority of whom are fair-minded, this should go through the commons with a large majority."

The changes will allow couples who have not legally married to adopt, if the authorities are satisfied that they are over 21 and in a permanent and stable relationship.
