New Statistics released

National Statistics on children and young people on child protection registers were published last week by the Department of Health. P>Here are the main findings for year ending 31 March 2001

  • There were about 26,800 children on Child Protection Registers at 31 March 2001, 11% fewer than a year earlier It is estimated that about 27,000 children's names were added to the register during the year, representing an 8% decrease on last year's figure of 29,300. Numbers of de-registrations during the year, at about 30,200, were 1% lower than a year earlier.

  • 46% of registrations during 2000/01 related to children considered at risk of neglect; this proportion has been rising steadily since 1994, the number of cases for which emotional abuse has been recorded has also risen over the same period. In contrast the use of the categories 'physical abuse' and 'sexual abuse' has fallen.

  • 5,400 (20%) of the children on the register at 31 March 2001 were also looked after by local authorities 14% of children registered during 2000/01 had been registered before; this proportion has remained the same as the previous year (PSS PAF Indicator A3)

  • 11% of children leaving the register had been on it for over 2 years; this proportion has decreased steadily over the last few years (PSS PAF Indicator C21)
