Party plan for children in care

A celebration to mark the achievements of children in care in south Gloucestershire is set to be held later this year.

Social services staff have taken advice from councils around the country who organise events for youngsters who are with foster parents or in residential homes to find out what is involved.

They discovered a growing number of activities, some of them involving the appearance of guest celebrities to meet the children.

Entertainment and food were provided and certificates and gifts presented to a number of nominated youngsters.

Now South Gloucestershire Council's executive is to be asked to support a similar event, to be held in September or October.

Bill Robbins, the director of social services, said the celebration would involve consulting children in care to find out what they wanted to happen. Talks would also be held with other council departments to find a venue.
