Mike Leigh coaxes magic performance

Look out tomorrow for Mike Leigh's moving and thought-provoking film Secrets and Lies.

The award-winning 1996 movie is about an adopted black career woman's search for her birth mother and features fabulous performances from a fine British cast.

The lead role of Hortense, who discovers her natural mother is white, works in a factory and lives in a terraced house, is played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste (pictured).

Also starring Brenda Blethyn, as the birth mother, Timothy Spall and Phyllis Logan, it paints a well-observed portrait of family tensions as the story veers from comedy to tragedy with Leigh coaxing complex and unsentimental performances from his cast.

The plot follows Hortense as she decides to trace her birth mother after the death of her adoptive mum and sees her battling through social services red tape and shock of discovering the truth about her past.

It is screened on Channel 4 at 10.00pm.
