Powerful ally for children

ChildLine Midlands, the free local helpline for children in trouble or danger, has received a donation of £5,000 from energy company Powergen.

The money will go towards recruiting and training four new volunteer counsellors for the helpline in Nottingham.

Caroline Anslow, manager of social affairs at Powergen, said: "ChildLine Midlands received the donation as part of the company's Charity of the Year scheme, whereby employees were asked to nominate both a national and local charity they would like the company to support.

"It was one of three local charities that each received £5,000 after polling the most votes."

Lisa Broughton from ChildLine Midlands said: ""Every day 15,000 attempted calls are made to ChildLine. Sadly, a lack of resources means that ChildLine can answer only around 3,500 of them. Funds are desperately needed to help us answer more calls from local children."
