News@www.adoption-net.co.uk This story published June 30, 2001 A whole new way of life... Like a lot of couples, John and Yvonne watched their children grow up and move away. With their house empty and more time on their hands, they looked for something to keep them busy. They could have joined the local bridge club, or taken up another hobby, but instead they decided to devote themselves to young people. Through social services John and Yvonne, who live in Nottingham, have fostered, and cared for 22 children. Now they are backing a campaign in the city to encourage more couples to follow in their footsteps and provide homes for Nottingham children. Yvonne believes fostering can make a big difference to the lives of young people. She said: "They keep coming back to see us. Whilst they are here they chat to the other young people we care for and tell them to take notice of the advice we are giving. Others come over for a meal or they give us a call to ask for practical help and advice." John added: "As time has passed, fostering has become a whole new way of life. "At times it has been challenging and difficult, but it has also given us a good deal of satisfaction and interest." He said there was full support and training for potential foster parents. "No-one is just left to get on with it alone. In the past year I've started my NVQ in child care and a part time course in counselling at our local college. "This is not something I'd ever thought I'd be doing. It's been a complete change of life for me. I'd never want to go back to my old working life, I'm enjoying this one too much." Carolyn Boot, of Nottinghamshire County Council's fostering recruitment scheme, said: "Ongoing support and training is offered to all foster carers, in addition to a basic allowance to cover the cost of caring for a child. "All foster carers now have an opportunity to receive additional allowances in recognition of skills, training undertaken and length of experience."
