Eire ups age of criminal responsibility

The age that children can be charged with a criminal offence is being raised from seven to 12 in the Irish Republic.

The Irish parliament considered the final stage of the new legislation in the Children Bill 1999 yesterday. The bill is the first major overhaul of the country's juvenile justice system since 1908.
