News@www.adoption-net.co.uk This story published June 20, 2001 People positive about disabilities People have a more positive attitude towards learning disabilities, a new survey for Mencap shows. But the charity says that people with a learning disability still face discrimination in many aspects of their lives. The survey of 1,066 adults, published during National Learning Disability Week, found 87 per cent believed people with a learning disability were employable but Mencap says only 7 per cent have jobs. The organisation said nine out of ten people with a disability experienced bullying in the last year and only three per cent of women, with a learning disability, receive cervical screening. Others people with Down's Syndrome have been denied heart surgery. Only half of those questioned thought people with learning disabilities should be able to make important decisions about their own lives, such as where to live or managing their own finances but 93 per cent said they would be happy to live next door to someone with a learning disability.
