Devon's plea for families who care

Families in Devon are being invited to become foster carers in a new recruitment drive.

Devon County Council currently needs to find around 100 temporary or permanent homes for children.

Council spokesman Tony Parker said: "In Devon a wide range of foster carers are needed. These can be from all walks of life - single, couples, young or older people."

Devon social services needs to find:

  • 30 long-term permanent homes for children where they can find stability and security.
  • 30 foster homes offering emergency and short-term placements, especially for teenagers.
  • 35 foster families to offer respite support for families in the community and other foster carers.
  • Five long-term permanent homes for sibling groups where brothers and sisters can stay together.
  • Five foster homes for children at residential schools in Devon where children can join in family life at weekends and school holidays.
  • Two foster families who can look after young offenders remanded into local authority care by the courts.

To support foster carers, the county council offers fostering allowances including special payments in recognition of skills and experience.

It also provides a dedicated social worker to supervise and assist at all times.

To support the campaign, the council has been holding events across the county and has donated £250 to the Exeter Fostercare Support Group.
