News@www.adoption-net.co.uk This story published June 14, 2001 Urgent plea for Somerset carers by Andy White Foster families are urgently wanted in north Somerset. North Somerset Council has launched an appeal to coincide with Foster Care Fortnight. The authority currently has about 100 carers on its books, but needs more families from a variety of backgrounds, particularly in the Nailsea and Clevedon areas. The number of young people fostered in the area varies, but in April around 120 young people were cared for in foster homes either on a short term, long term or respite care basis. Housing and social services committee chairman, Councillor Nigel Ashton, said foster carers provided a valuable service that benefited many young people. He added: "Foster carers work extremely hard to ensure that the young people in their homes receive the best care possible. These people make a difference to the lives of others." One foster parent who has been in the job for 16 years was inspired after working in a children's home. She said: "I felt that some of the children didn't know what it was like to be part of a family so I decided to start fostering while my own children were young. "I would recommend fostering to others. You need to have a genuine fondness for children, a sense of humour, flexibility and patience."
