The Department of Health has a new minister responsible for adoption and fostering.

The previous social care minister John Hutton is among the few to hold on a junior ministerial post in Prime Minister Tony Blair's reshuffle but is taking over responsibility for primary care, and NHS pay and conditions from John Denham.

Replacing him is Jacqui Smith, previously a junior minister with the Department for Education and Employment. Alan Milburn continues as Health Secretary.
