News@www.adoption-net.co.uk This story published June 13, 2001 Dwayne needs caring male role model Can you be the positive male role model nine-year-old Dwayne needs to help him overcome his anger and mistrust of adults? Dwayne is of Anglo-Caribbean parentage. He and his older sister spent their early years in Birmingham in a violent household from which his mother eventually fled. He acted out the distress he experienced by being aggression towards his home and his mother who eventually sought help. Respite breaks have since been provided by a children's home. Dwayne is still confused and angry and finds it difficult to trust adults and to give and receive affection. He is also independent-minded and used to a level of freedom beyond his years. However underneath, he is bright boy who is good at sport and has lots of friends. He also has good social skills and a wonderful sense of humour. This work now needs to be maintained with a family who can continue to share with his mother the task of bringing up Dwayne. The ideal family, preferably based in the Amber Valley area of Derbyshire, will provide a firm but caring male role model who understands the needs of a black child living with his white mother. They will be able to help his mother to better understand Dwayne's needs and how to meet them and be able to support her in developing the skills to provide the necessary care and control to enable him to return home on a full-time basis.
