Confidential papers from Brent social services department were found by a member of the public and handed to a local newspaper.

The papers, found behind the north London borough's council offices, was handed to, but unpublished by the Hendon Times newspaper. They included details about children referred to the authority and included sexual abuse allegations.

The files have since been returned to the council which said, in a statement, that a thorough investigation would be launched.
