New book on intercountry adoption by www.adoption-net.co.uk staff

The British Agencies for Adoption and Fostering is publishing a new book on adopting children from other countries.

Intercountry Adoption: Developments, trends and perspectives is edited by Peter Selman, a senior social policy lecturer at the University of Newcastle, looks at some of the ethical issues raised intercountry adoption from the point of view of sending countries and includes accounts of the experiences of adoptive parents and adults who were adopted from abroad as children.

It contains 30 chapters written by experts from more than ten countries and is is the first major edited collection on intercountry adoption to be published in the UK, looking at the development of the practice globally with a particular focus on the current position in the UK.

The 545-page book, out this month, also looks at the history of intercountry adoption, reviews recent research into outcomes and describes policy and practice in the UK, Europe, Australia and the United States.

It is expected to focus debate about Britain's future involvement in intercountry adoption and how services to children adopted from abroad and the families who care for them can be improved.
