Jacqui to champion pupil rights

A leading children's charity has appointed a new boss to coninue its work to help children at risk from being expelled from school, including youngsters in care.

Jacqui Newvell has been appointed by the National Children's Bureau as head of its Pupil Inclusion Unit, taking over from Barbara Fletcher.

Unit works with schools, voluntary agencies and local authorities to ensure children at risk of exclusion can access the support they need to stay in school.

In her role at the NCB, she aims to help local authorities and schools to implement effective inclusion programs for marginalised groups, such as children in care.

Before joining the NCB, Jacqui worked for the education and social work services in Camden and Tower Hamlets. She was at Tower Hamlets for 12 years, starting as a field social worker and rising to become head of the service. She left in 1996 to manage a similar service in Camden.

In both councils she worked with some of inner London's most socially disadvantaged children and helped to allow them their right to an education.

Jacqui also represents the National Association of Social Workers and Education as a training and development officer.
