News@www.adoption-net.co.uk This story published August 15, 2000 Extra day for charity trekkers by www.adoption-net.co.uk staff An adoption charity has added an extra day to its fund-raising trek along part of the Great Wall of China (pictured below). The British Agencies for Adoption and Fostering is planning to take up to 40 people to China next year and hopes to raise more than £40,000. Those interested in completing the trek will need to be physically fit and will have to pay BAAF a £199 registration fee and raise at least £2,000 in sponsorship. The cost of travel and board will be paid for. So far six people have signed up for the trek and another six are about to sign up. There is no deadline for wanting to register your interest but the sooner you do, the more time you will have to meet the necessary fundraising target. Eighty per cent of the fundraising must have been collected at least ten weeks before the start of the trip on March 25. The journey will take hikers through spectacular landscapes and visit ancient temples and villages rarely visited by foreign tourists. Originally the trek was for nine days but the travel agency, organising the trip have added an extra day for nothing which means that trekkers will have an extra day to explore Beijing and overcome any jet lag. Organiser Gary Williams said that most people want to know how many miles the trip is. "The difficulty lies in expressing the distances in miles rather than hours. The landscape changes daily so a walk of four hours one day may cover eight miles but the next, over tougher terrain, might cover two," he said. The flight from Heathrow to Beijing takes about nine hours. As well as taking in parts of the Great Wall, trekkers will also be walking through forest and waterfall parks and as well as walking, there is the chance to do some of the journey by cable car, chair lift or toboggan. For an information pack you can contact Mr Williams at BAAF on 020 7593 2000, fax 0207 593 2001 or visit the BAAF website for more information. © adoption-net.co.uk 2000 This site has been designed with few graphics to make it quick to load and simple to navigate. |
