Derek the Duckling is a simple picture book that tries to explain through animal characters what is happening to a child when they go into care. It deals with the emotions the child is likely to be feeling and how they can overcome the sadness and fear of going into foster care. The booklet also touches on the issue of contact with a child's parents. It is available from The Children's Society, dward Rudolf House, Margery Street, London. WC1X 0JL. However, Adoption-net has a copy to give away to the first foster carer to write in with their experiences, happy or sad, when looking after children in care.
