News@www.adoption-net.co.uk This story published August 13, 2000 Fun in store in sure start project by www.adoption-net.co.uk staff A fun day has been organised today by parents as part of the Sure Start initiative in Medway in the south east. The Sure Start project is a part of a Government initiative to pump up to £1 million a year into disadvantaged parts of Chatham to help improve the development of pre-school children. The scheme's goal is to improve and co-ordinate support for families and to improve parenting skills to help nurture the development of babies and young children. The fun day, at the White Road community centre in Chatham between 12pm and 4pm, has been organised to promote the initiative, which will involve up to 1,000 children in the area. The event, which will include children's entertainers, games, judo demonstrations, a barbecue, and a fancy dress competition, has been organised by Diane Hughes, who has lived on the White Road estate for more than 20 years. She said: "We are hoping to let people know that Sure Start is something they can be involved in. "Parents with young children can feel isolated raising their children and often coping alone so Sure Start will offer support to parents where they can get together have a chat and a coffee." The £452 million Sure Start project involves 250 schemes across the country. Do you have a story for Adoption-net?
