New boss to join up services
Wigan Council has a new deputy director of social services.
Gerald Meehan was previously with St Helen's Metropolitan Borough Council where he worked as senior assistant director in charge of children's services.
He comes from Bristol and has worked for the majority of his career with Avon social services. He began his career there as a children's home manager, rising to become team manager and then service manager in Bristol. After that, he moved north to work as a senior manager in Liverpool.
His predecessor Anita Marsland has moved to Knowsley council as director of social services.
Mr Meehan said: "I want to work towards creating increasingly flexible services that promote people's independence and good health.
"I am very much looking forward to working with the excellent staff in both Wigan's social services and the local health service, and to help build on their current achievements."
Director of social services Bernard Walker said: "Gerald already knows Wigan well and has a natural sympathy and understanding for local people. He has all the experience of both social work and its management that we need."
