Children seeking new families
by www.adoption-net.co.uk staff

More adoptive families for children over the age of two and for those with disabilities are being sought by North Somerset Council.

The agency particular needs people living in the south west but outside Weston-super-Mare.

Director of social services Eileen Means said: "Adoption is a positive option for children who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to grow up with their birth family.

"But is vital to find a suitable home as soon as possible once adoption has been decided as the best option."

"Adoptive parents reflect a variety of situations and backgrounds. The main qualities are that they can provide a stable and loving home environment, have an understanding of children's needs, and are patient with a strong sense of commitment," added Mrs Means.

As with all agencies across Britain, most of the children seeking adoptive families suffer from varying degrees of emotional and psychological difficulties.

Those with disabilities can range from slight visual impairment through to profound problems such as cerebral palsy.

Adoption social worker Debbie Havill said: "Adopters can be single, divorced, any gender and any sexual persuasion. It is their qualities that are important."

By law, adopters must be over 21 and in North Somerset, the council has a 45-year limit on the age gap between adopter and child.

Anyone interested in adoption should contact the family placement team on 01275 888236.
