What sort of children need fostering?

It is impossible to describe the typical foster child - they can be any age from a baby up an 18-year-old and from any social or ethnic background.

The one thing that many have in common is that for some reason their family is facing a crisis and for that reason they need to leave the family home and be placed with foster carers.

Because of this most are in need of warmth and understanding at a time of stress and uncertainty.

The reasons that children need to be fostered are as varied as the children themselves. There may be a family illness or family problems such as housing or financial difficulties.

The breakdown of relationships can also mean children need to be fostered for a while. Parents may find that a troublesome teenager becomes unmanageable, or the parents of a disabled child need a break.

Often, though, the children have been emotionally, physically or sexually abused and have been removed from their parental home through a court order and need a safe place to stay.
