How to apply Placements If you feel that fostering is for you, the first thing to do is contact your local social services department or an independent fostering agency. These can be found by Clicking here or looking in your local telephone directory. Every agency will have a slightly different approach to the fostering procedure but many aspects are governed by law and will apply to all. Many people, who would make good foster carers, hesitate about putting their names forward because they imagine that qualifying is a long and difficult process. Most agencies try to make the approval process as straightforward as possible - many are always in need of more foster carers and the last thing they want to do is put off potential applicants. The process of becoming a foster carer is a two-way process. Applicants get a chance to find out what is involved and the agency gets to know you. During the initial contact with an agency you may be asked briefly about your circumstances. It is likely that you will be advised that your police and health records will need to be checked during the assessment procedure. The next thing to happen is you will be sent an information pack.
