Disabled Children

Many of the children seeking a new family have disabilities. Their ages range from babies to teenagers.

Sometimes their birth parents may feel unable to care for them or they may be placed for adoption for reasons that are not connected to their disability.

Some may have learning difficulties such as Down's syndrome. Others may have physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy.

Whatever a child's disability they, like all other children, need the affection and stability that family life can offer.

Many are capable of offering a great deal of love in return and can be just as rewarding to care for as a child without disabilities.

Some will be able to lead independent or semi-independent lives when they are older. Others will need care for life.

All adoption agencies approve both single adopters and couples, with children and without children, to adopt disabled children. They may also give financial help to adopters of a disabled child.

Adopters of disabled children do need understanding and commitment but they do not need extraordinary qualities.

There are probably many families who are more than capable of providing a happy stable home for a disabled child but just do not realise it because they are frightened to give it a go.
