Abused Children

Many children placed for adoption have been physically or sexually abused.

Adopters of these children should always be offered information and advice, and if appropriate, training to prepare them for some of the issues and problems which might arise from the child's experience of abuse.

Far from feeling as though they have been rescued from a traumatic situation, abused children can feel very angry about being separated from their parents.

They may feel that what has happened is their fault or even the fault of those who have adopted them.

Sexually abused children may demonstrate inappropriate and highly sexualised behaviour towards their adopters or other members of the family which many find quite difficult to cope with.

This sexualised behaviour means that where children seek physical affection, families may have to be much more guarded about giving those innocent and instinctive cuddles and hugs.

Anyone considering taking on an abused child should read up on this highly complex subject.

The British Agencies for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) has published a book After Abuse available by calling 020 759 32 072. Information is also available from libraries and social services departments.
