Q. My son was adopted in 1969.

Could you advise me on how I might be able to make contact with him, or if there may be any useful websites I could use.
Thank you

A. There are a number of tracing agencies featured on our site under 'Links' and then 'Tracing families'.

Also there are some national registers that you can use. The links for these are:
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/registration/Adoptions/AdoptionContactRegister.asp
and http://www.norcap.org.uk

Hope that helps.

I am more than happy for you to call me if you want a chat about this. We don't offer a tracing service BUT I can point you in the right direction and offer some tips - and it's free advice!

Hope that helps.

Q. In conversation recently I was informed that one was not permitted to adopt if one or both the partners in the relationship was over thirty years old.

This seems like errant nonsense to me, indeed I was under the impression that one could not be considered until one was at least twenty-five, yet this information comes from a normally reliable source.

My wife and I have been discussing the possibilities for a short time and I am conducting some research could you clarify this point.

A. Hi and thanks for your e-mail. The situation is this:
You have to be over the age of 21 to adopt (18 if your adopting a step-child). There is NO upper age limit however (as a guide) they prefer the child to be no more than 40 years younger than the parent.

This means that if you were in your mid forties for example the adoption agency would probably suggest a child of five or over.

This rule is not set in stone and is only a guide. Issues such as health, lifestyle etc are considered but what is without doubt is that people over thirty can apply to adopt.

Kind regards,
Matt.
